Do you have a great camera and wish to take wonderful pictures? Sometimes the photograph doesn’t turn out right and you wonder why?? All of us can’t be professional photographers, even if we have some of the latest styles of cameras. Here are some pointers that you can use to capture good photographs.

1. Hold the camera steady with your elbows close to your body, or propped on something like a table or a bench or preferably use a tripod.

2. Is the light enough for a good photograph? Always remember that the light should shine on the face of the person or thing you are photographing and not on the lens.

3. Some photographs just bring a smile on your face. Just seeing these two girls giggling away makes you happy too. When you want to take a photograph, just see the situation and how it feels to you. Just being at the right place may sometimes fetch you great pictures.

Basic concepts of photography

4. Look at it from a different angle. Sometimes a perfectly ordinary thing like a staircase may look wonderful, when you capture the picture from a different angle.

5. Before you click, check if you have focused right or is there any distraction in the background. Backgrounds are very important in photographs. It can make your subject stand out. It may also sometimes distract the subject in focus. Like this picture below, it looks like the tree is sprouting from the man’s head!!

6.The next essential thing is the direction that your subject looks when being photographed. It can have a great impact upon an image, so check it carefully. The line of vision of the subject can be used to create the mood of the picture.

7. Talk to experienced photographers. Study lots of photographs to see how they have been composed.

8. Don’t be afraid to experiment. Try taking photographs with different setups. If you have a digital camera, you need not worry about wasting film rolls. Just photograph and delete the ones you don’t like!!

9. Take lots and lots of pictures.

10. Have fun photographing!!

03 Sep 2009 The ‘Light’ Side of Photography
 |  Category: Photography Tips  | Leave a Comment

photoPhotography is all about light and how you control it.The right use of light can decide whether your photograph will be spectacular or terrible. Too much light or too little light can spoil the picture. Consider the angle of light when you take shots. You can use shadows to create special effects that have the capability to turn an ordinary photo into a stunning one.

Play with back lighting for fabulous pictures. A pretty difficult technique to master, backlighting manipulates the light to enhance the finer detail of the object that is photographed. While you are using this technique, remember to take your camera light reading from the background instead of the subject.

When you photograph outdoors, use sunlight for maximum effect, the harsh afternoon sun will generate shadows. Position your subject in the shade to avoid unwanted shadows. Use diffused sunlight in the twilight and morning to create quality pictures.

Experiment with different lightings to get great pictures that have your personal touch.

26 Mar 2009 Resolving the Resolution Riddle
 |  Category: Camera Features, Camera Technology  | 2 Comments

Digital images have thousands of tiny, tile-like picture elements. When choosing a digital camera (digicam), the first thing that you should consider is the resolution. Image resolution is the amount of detail the image holds.

Line pairs are used to measure resolution. A line pair is a pair of adjacent dark and light lines. A resolution of 10 lines per millimeter is equivalent to 5 dark lines alternating with 5 light lines (or 5 line pairs per millimeter). For example, a 640 x 480 image would have 307,200 pixels, or approximately 3.1 megapixels; a 3872 x 2592 image would have a10,036,224 pixels, or approximately 10 megapixels. The more pixels an image has, the higher the resolution.

Below is an illustration of how the same image might appear at different pixel resolutions.

Image at different pixel resolutions

Image at different pixel resolutions

The number of megapixels is not an absolute measure, but only indicates the potential image resolution. Important factors that affect resolution include sensor design, the lens quality, focus (distance and length), aperture, position in the image field, orientation (horizontal, vertical, and diagonal), scene contrast, and vibration.

There is a wide misconception about the resolving power of digicams. For instance, my 12-megapixel digital camera does not have twice the resolving power of a 6-megapixel camera. It only has twice that of a 3-megapixel camera. Why? Because images are two-dimensional objects. When we double the resolving power, there is a fourfold increase in pixels (of equal quality) and not just a twofold increase!
